Reimagining the milk supply chain: Reusable vessels for bulk delivery
نویسندگان
چکیده
Milk packaging has been analysed multiple times in pursuit of finding the most appropriate vessel from an environmental point view. Research concentrated on commercially available containers 0.5 – 2.5 litres, usually made High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Terephtalate (PET), paper-based cartons, or glass, with some studies considering a reuse scheme for glass bottles. Whilst applicable household delivery, such is not practical delivery to cafés where large volumes milk are used every day; little information known about transportation bulk bigger vessels as steel churns. This study compares proposed supply chain using mix reusable stainless churns and bottles current that uses single-use HDPE bottles, 10 belonging The University Sheffield. A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) conducted data obtained university Our Cow Molly, local dairy farm which delivers university. Sensitivity analysis was performed around recycling rate plastic water consumption churn cleaning, source on-farm electricity. suggests greenhouse gas emission can be lowered by approx. 6.5 tons CO2 equivalent annually if applied (this equates 65% reduction processes analysed). Considerable savings also reported categories consumption, fossil resources depletion cumulative energy demand. is, however, likely induce similar higher mineral resource use damage marine eutrophication category due treatment. Further improvements could achieved reducing amount cleaning hence electricity demand heating. benefit environmentally electric refrigerated van instead diesel vehicle.

Coordinating Order Acceptance and Batch Delivery for an Integrated Supply Chain Scheduling
This paper develops Order Acceptance for an Integrated Production-Distribution Problem in which Batch Delivery is implemented. The aim of this problem is to coordinate: (1) rejecting some of the orders (2) production scheduling of the accepted orders and (3) batch delivery to maximize Total Net Profit. A Mixed Integer Programming is proposed for the problem. In addition, a hybrid meta-heuristic...
متن کاملCost Characterizations of Supply Chain Delivery Performance
This paper addresses strategies for improving delivery performance in a serial supply chain when delivery performance is evaluated with respect to a delivery window. Contemporary management theories advocate the reduction of variance as a key step in improving the overall performance of a system. Models are developed that incorporate the variability found in the individual stages of the supply ...
متن کاملSupply Chain Management with Guaranteed Delivery
We consider a two-stage supply chain under centralized control. The downstream facility faces discrete stochastic demand and passes supply requests to the upstream facility. The upstream facility always meets the supply requests from downstream. If the upstream facility cannot meet the supply requests from inventory on hand, the shortage must be filled by expediting, which will incur per unit a...
متن کاملSupply chain scheduling: Batching and delivery
Although the supply chain management literature is extensive, the benefits and challenges of coordinated decision making within supply chain scheduling models have not been studied. We consider a variety of scheduling, batching and delivery problems that arise in an arborescent supply chain where a supplier makes deliveries to several manufacturers, who also make deliveries to customers. The ob...
